Kobe port

The Kobe earthquake on 17 January 1995 led to 40,071 casualties including 6000 dead. A quarter of a million homes and buildings were destroyed and the city isolated from its road and rail connections. 116km of port shoreline was destroyed. According to the earthquake exhibition in the city, "The most serious damage to the international port was the destruction of its 21 container terminals which had handled about 70% of the international freight before the quake."

A new temporary cargo facility within two months of the quake. A temporary bridge was constructed to the Port Island whilst the main structure was being repaired. Meanwhile, relief supplies were unloaded by hand onto small trucks for distribution.

The Luminare display of lights event commemorates the earthquake victims.
